Abstract

This study was performed to estimate the preventive effect on dental caries, the prevalence of dental fluorosis and rates of the awareness on water fluoridation in water fluoridated area.
Dental survey had been done for 537. children in fluoridated area and 532 children in non-fluoridated area of the first grade elementary school in 1991. And the survey was, done again for same children in 1992. The author calculated the prevalence of fluorosis and the DFS increment of all surfaces, pits and fissures, and smooth surfaces, and compared those in fluoridated area with in non-fluoridated area. Also, questionnaires had been conducted for the subjects¢¥ parents in fluoridated area to estimate awareness concerning water fluoridation. The. results were as follows:
1. Mean DES of all surfaces was reduced 45.8% by water fluoridation.
2. Reduction rates of mean PPS by water fluoridation were 78.5% for smooth surfaces and 42.9% for pits and fissures.
3. Prevalence rate of very mild fluorosis in 6-year-old children was 6.1% in water fluoridated area.
4. It is recommended that residents in water fluoridated area should be informed of water fluoridation and the quality of water.
